Young Musicians Project

Free, youth-led music-making sessions for 11–19 year olds in Sunderland.

YMP is a network of groups where young people can start making music, develop their skills, collaborate with others, and take their first steps into gigging, recording, and releasing their work.

About YMP

All young people are welcome, whether you’ve never written a song before or already have music you’re working on.

YMP is made up of a network of groups across the city, based in both youth and music spaces. This means young people can get involved locally and then take things further as their confidence and interests grow.

We run community-based groups in spaces like Hendon and Lambton Street, offering accessible, local entry points for young people to start making music in a familiar environment.

Alongside this, our central sessions take place in dedicated music spaces, where young people can collaborate, develop their sound and be part of a wider YMP community.

Across all YMP groups, the ethos is the same — high-quality, youth-led sessions led by professional musicians, where young people are taken seriously as artists.

Some groups focus on getting started, building confidence and playing together, while others focus more on original work, songwriting and collaboration. Young people often move between these spaces over time, as their confidence and interests grow.

Across all groups, young people work with professional musicians to write, rehearse and create their own music.
