Lasses and Lyrics

From October to December 2020, We Make Culture ran one of the 14 Reverberate projects happening all over the UK, supporting grassroots, youth-focused heritage projects. Our project, “Lasses and Lyrics” supported young female musicians to uncover forgotten stories of women in Sunderland and write, record and perform original songs based on them.

Led by Natasha Haws, the group discovered these Wearside women through public story submissions, heritage research and guest speakers including Dr. Sarah Hellawell from the University of Sunderland and musician, Eve Simpson.

It was a new challenge and the first time songwriting to both brief and deadline. We’re so pleased with the work the group created whilst facing different types of isolation, as well as lockdown restrictions that changed four times in our area during the project!

Our Lasses and Lyrics artwork was also specially commissioned and is by young Sunderland based designer, Sara Heraoua.
